You can teach them to catch a ball and ask them to throw a particular color ball. Leave the pile to them and ask them to segregate the items based on colors. Pick a pair of toys or pictures from different categories.

Take your child for a walk to your local newsagent and have them choose a comic. They’re a great treat packed with puzzles and tasks and sometimes a small toy that will keep them occupied for hours. Grab the dollies and give them some extra special care and attention. Just add loo-paper bandages and a few plasters and play along.

Put cups, plates and bowls in a low drawer that your toddler can reach. There have been times when I’ve wondered what in the world we’re going to do to fill up the day.
For an older 2-year-old, you could have them find 4 items to place in the basket, etc. This is one you can really cater to different skill levels while reinforcing concepts they know and are eager to show you. Give your child a basket and have them find only green items to place in the basket, or maybe only items that are square. Now that they are 2, our children really have a sense of what their bodies are capable of.
Anything unexpected will delight your two-year-old and again, it’s how they learn, so you are laying the foundation for a good sense of humor. If they have picked up a bad word from you (never!) or your husband — or the older next-door neighbor kid, ignore it — act like it’s no big deal. Understanding these basic shapes first will lead them to understand the harder shapes down the line.
Puzzle or read through the whole book, before they get up and run around. The best way to get them active is to give them lots of outdoor time. Take them to playgrounds to climb on the equipment as they offer so many opportunities for enriching gross motor skills. Take them for a walk and point out all the sights you see. If you want to try out some more complicated interlocking puzzles try these to start. Also the name puzzles mentioned above are great to also enhance letter learning at the same time.
